Background: Adolescents undergo various physical and psychological changes that affect their health.
Many adolescents tend to consume non-nutritious foods, risking nutritional problems such as obesity.
Therefore, media education on balanced nutrition is important to improve their knowledge. Objectives:
This study aims to determine the effect of media education such as brochure, calendar and animated
video on the knowledge, physical activity and food intake of adolescents who have overweight and obese
nutritional status. Methods: This study used quantitative design with Quasi Experimental Design method,
and Pre-Post Test Design. The sample consisted of 30 students of SMAN 1 Telukjambe who were taken
by purposive sampling. There were three types of educational media: brochure, motivational calendar,
and animated video. Data were collected by interview that used nutrition knowledge questionnaire, IPAQ
for physical activity, and 24 H recall for food intake. Results: The results of the analysis showed that
there was a significant increase in nutritional knowledge after providing education using educational
media such as brochures (p value = 0.04) and animated videos (p value = 0.018) or (p value <0.05)
while there was no increase in knowledge on motivational calendar media (p value > 0.05). There was
no effect of providing brochures, calendars and animated videos on increasing physical activity and
intake (p value > 0.05). Conclusion : Brochure and animation media have an effect on increasing adolescent nutritional knowledge, but do not affect intake and physical activity. Educational calendar
media do not affect increasing knowledge, physical activity and intake.
